A recent headline in the Glenside Local newspaper has created some confusion concerning the Township’s search for a small Code Blue Shelter to provide an emergency shelter for homeless individuals in our community.  The headline for the article, which seems to have been somewhat awkwardly written, has been read by some to suggest that the Township is considering locating a Code Blue shelter in one of its parks or other locations in the Township.  

To be clear, the Township is not considering Woodlawn Park, Farmstead Park or any other Township park for a homeless shelter.  

The Township has been trying for some time to secure a location to house a small Code Blue Shelter.  A Code Blue shelter is a facility that houses homeless individuals during days/nights when temperatures reach a certain level.  Montgomery County issues a Code Blue alert when temperatures fall to 32 degrees or less.  The Township has a small number of homeless residents who sometimes stay the night in the lobby of our police station during Code Blue events.  Given the very small size of our police station lobby, housing these residents in the lobby is not a good long term solution.  Consequently, the Township has been reaching out to churches and other non-profit organizations in the downtown area to try to find a better location for these homeless residents during Code Blue events.  To date, we have been unsuccessful in finding such a location.
