The Upper Moreland Township Police Benevolent Association (UMTPBA) is a non-profit organization which was formed in late 1997 by the sworn officers of Upper Moreland Police. The purpose of forming the UMTPBA was to create a forum to help the officers interact with the community, improve working conditions, morale, and the general welfare of the members of the UMTPBA.
Since our inception we have been able to provide holiday baskets for needy families in the community. Last year the PBA donated $1,000 to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life as well as forming a team which took in donations. This will be the second year that members of the PBA will be manning a volunteer booth at the June Fete Fair. At that booth Officers will be providing informational booklets and will be fingerprinting children. For the past two years, we have been able to offer bicycle helmets at the elementary school fairs to both students and parents for only $10. This has been a great success in helping to ensure the safety of the children in our community.
This year the PBA has been able to start a new program offering a $1,000 scholarship to an Upper Moreland High School Student. The qualifications required for the scholarship was to be pursuing a career in criminal justice and to have been active in the community. All applications submitted were carefully reviewed and this year's recipient was Jessica Cooper. We hope to be able to make this an annual scholarship.
Last year the PBA was instrumental in organizing an Honor Guard unit for the Township. Ten officers volunteered to be on the unit and the PBA, along with the Township, paid for the uniforms and related equipment to get the unit started. The Honor Guard represents the township in parades and memorial services. Last year the Honor Guard was in the Hatboro Christmas Parade and this year has been in the following events: Montgomery County Police Officers Memorial, Loyalty Day Parade, Bucks County Police Memorial Service, Warminster's Memorial Day Parade. Currently we have an order in for two refurbished M1 rifles, which will help to bring the unit up to a professional standard.
If you have any comments or suggestions on how the PBA can increase interaction with the community, or to help further its goals we can be contacted at: PO Box 325 Willow Grove, Pa. 19090.
